For a long time now I have noticed that the stock exhaust manifolds on my LT-1 would glow red after pulling it in the garage at night. It would have to be pitch black but they were still glowing. The biggest thing that worried me was that it occured only on the back two cylinders of the passenger side. I have checked other LT-1's and they too would make the manifolds glow. I removed the catalytic converter, added free-er flowing exhaust and still the manifolds glow red. Now that I have installed the headers the same thing happens except the headers glow. So the next step is to figure out if in fact the rear cylinders are running hotter than the others. To do this I employed Thermal Imaging Services of Central IL to take some video of the headers after driving the car for about 30 minutes.
As you can see in the pictures you can see that I did infact wrap the headers with Thermo Tec Header wrap, this stuff really works, where the wrap is doubled over the wrap is actually cooler. I did find out that all eight were running at the same tempareture, but what I did find even more interesting was the scan of the intake manifold. The paint on the intake manifold acts as a thermal insulator. In the pics you can see the stripes of the top of the manifold where I sanded the paint off for a decorative touch. That area is drastically cooler than the rest of the intake manifold. This leads me to believe that painting the inake may not be the best idea in the world. The next time I have it off I think I will strip it back to bare aluminum.
Some other cool pictures are of the alternator and the coolant lines.
